Kyah Development Corporation (KDC), wholly owned by the Witset Band, spearheads economic development and diversification for the community. Founded in 2006, KDC manages the Band’s diverse portfolio through the Kyah Development Limited Partnership, overseeing assets like Kyah Resources - Forestry Division and Kyah Industries Ltd, and operates Kyah Food & Fuel. Committed to fostering economic growth, KDC provides business advisory services, entrepreneurial mentoring, and facilitates government and industry partnerships, all while honoring cultural values and enhancing community capacity.

About Witset First Nation

Witset First Nation (formerly known as Moricetown), rooted in Wetsuwet’in heritage, is based in Witset, a cultural gem known as ‘Kyah Wiget' ('Old Village'). Nestled in northwest British Columbia alongside the Bulkley River, Witset, thrives as a community of approximately 2,100 members. Originally Wetsuwet’in fishing grounds, Witset has evolved into a flourishing village with 661 on-reserve and 1,129 off-reserve members.

Situated between Smithers and New Hazelton, Witset embraces its rich culture and history, echoing through the valley, a land loved for generations. As a federally recognized Indian band, Witset First Nation is dedicated to providing tailored programs and services for its diverse community.

About the Opportunity

KDC has an exciting opportunity for members of its paid Board of Directors based in Witset, BC (remote). This role requires travel to Witset, BC, for board meetings and other board-related accountabilities.

Guiding our CEO, the Board will primarily be responsible for ensuring the strategic oversight of the Corporation's ventures and economic development initiatives.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the management of Witset Band-owned ventures
  • Providing strategic direction for economic development and diversification projects
  • Mentoring and advising the CEO
  • Evaluating and approving business plans and feasibility studies
  • Keeping minutes and maintaining records of meetings
  • Building partnerships with government, industry, and other First Nations organizations
  • Securing funding for development projects
  • Enhancing community capacity through strategic initiatives
  • Promoting business development across sectors such as tourism, gaming, forestry, cannabis, and construction

About You

To qualify, you will need a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field, with 7+ years of senior-level experience in business development, tourism, forestry, cannabis, construction industries, or a relevant industry.

  • Strategic direction development and guidance
  • Strong financial acumen and risk management
  • Proven leadership and mentorship abilities to executive/senior management
  • Expertise in corporate governance and regulatory compliance
  • Understanding of Board legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Industry knowledge, market trends, and economic development
  • Cultural competency and knowledge of Indigenous communities in BC
  • Effective communication and relationship-building with stakeholders
  • Innovation and sustainable growth support
  • Familiarity with securing funding and managing business structures
  • Willingness to travel and participate in community events

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong leadership and mentoring abilities, exceptional strategic thinking, and the flexibility to handle dynamic challenges. You will also have excellent communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, and the community.

This is a pivotal role where you will guide the Corporation’s CEO and help steer the economic future of the Witset Band, contributing to sustainable growth and community development. Your awareness and sensitivity to the cultural context and values of the community served by Kyah Development Corporation will ensure that you make decisions that reflect ethical standards and corporate values.
